Abstract
Knowledge Cartography is a specific form of information visualisation, seeking to represent spatially intellectual worlds that have no intrinsic spatial properties. It is concerned with a variety of techniques that make certain conceptual structures explicit. These techniques will be briefly mentioned in the seminar after delving into 'what', 'why' and 'who' of Knowledge Cartography. This concept is widely being used in the field of education and research as well as fields like Library and Information Science, Medicine, Human Resource Management, Construction Management, etc. It has high economic, knowledge, structural and organisational returns.
Maps, being one of the oldest forms of human communication, mediate the inner mental world and outer physical world. Hence, Knowledge Cartography is one of the best ways to organise and manage knowledge resources. In this seminar, an introduction to the concept will be given, exploring the structure and functions of knowledge maps. The uses and applications, in various fields, will also be discussed after going through some varieties of knowledge maps. A glance on the advantages of using knowledge maps will be taken and the seminar will conclude after discussing a case study and some software tools that help in mapping knowledge.
